How do I test my webcam online?
- Click the Start camera test button above.
- When your browser asks for permission, click Allow.
- You should see yourself in the preview. The cards below it show the actual resolution and frame rate your camera is delivering right now.
- Optional: take a snapshot to check how you look, or use the mirror toggle to see the un-mirrored view other people see.
Why is my camera not working or showing black?
- Privacy shutter closed: many webcams and laptops have a physical cover over the lens. Slide it open.
- Another app has the camera: only one app can use most webcams at a time. Close Zoom, Teams, Discord, or OBS and reload.
- Permission blocked: click the camera icon in the address bar, set camera access to Allow, then reload.
- Wrong camera selected: if you have a virtual camera installed (OBS Virtual Camera, Snap Camera), your browser may pick it by default. Switch devices in the dropdown above.
- System settings: on macOS check System Settings, Privacy and Security, Camera. On Windows check Settings, Privacy, Camera.
Frequently asked questions
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. The preview runs entirely in your browser. Your video never leaves your machine, and snapshots are saved directly to your device only if you click download.
Why do I look mirrored?
Self views are usually mirrored so they feel like a mirror, but other people see you un-mirrored. Use the toggle above to preview both. Snapshots are taken un-mirrored, which is how you appear to others.
What resolution should my webcam be?
720p is the minimum for professional looking calls, 1080p is the sweet spot, and 4K matters mainly for recorded content. If the readout shows less than your camera's advertised spec, poor lighting is the usual cause: cameras drop resolution and frame rate in the dark.
Why is my frame rate low?
Add light. Webcams slow their shutter in dim rooms, which cuts the frame rate and adds motion blur. A window in front of you or a cheap desk light fixes more webcam problems than any setting.
