Ever wonder why YouTube feels like it knows you?

Hi! I’m Robby. I spend my days building AI systems, and one of the coolest examples of AI in the real world is sitting right on your phone: the YouTube algorithm.

Every single minute, people upload 500 hours of video to YouTube. That is way too much for any human to watch! So, how does the site show you the perfect video for your coffee break? It uses a super-fast computer brain called a neural network.

The Two-Step Secret

YouTube uses a two-part process to pick your next video. Think of it like a giant funnel:

1. The Candidate Generator

Imagine a library with millions of books. You can’t read them all, so you pick a shelf that looks interesting. That’s what the Candidate Generator does. It looks at millions of videos and quickly grabs a few hundred that you might actually like based on what you’ve watched before.

2. The Ranking Network

Now that we have a smaller pile of videos, the Ranking Network takes over. It gives each video a “score.” It looks at things like:

  • How long you usually watch a video.
  • What you have liked in the past.
  • What other people like you are watching right now.

It picks the best-scoring videos and puts them right at the top of your screen.

Why YouTube Changed the Rules

A long time ago, YouTube only cared about “clicks.” They wanted you to click on anything, even if it was “clickbait.” But that didn’t feel very good, did it?

Today, YouTube cares more about your satisfaction. They want you to finish a video feeling happy or like you learned something new. They’ve trained their AI to look for videos that keep you watching because you want to, not because you were tricked into it.

The Bottom Line

YouTube’s homepage isn’t just random; it’s a smart system built to learn what makes you happy. By using these two neural networks, it constantly gets better at being your personal digital guide.

Next time you see a video pop up that you love, just remember: that’s machine learning working hard to make your screen time a little bit better!
