Replit is number 48 on a16z's new AI traffic list, but number 6 on what people actually pay for. That gap is the whole story of the seventh edition of a16z's Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps, published by Olivia Moore on October 5, 2026.

What changed in this edition

Past editions ranked apps by traffic only. This one adds a third list: spending.

  • Web top 50: unique monthly visits, from Similarweb (August 2026).
  • Mobile top 50: monthly active users, from Sensor Tower (August 2026).
  • Spending top 50: U.S. consumer card and e-receipt data from YipitData panels.

Keep the method in mind. The spending list is U.S. only and comes from panels, not a census, so it is not total company revenue. Gemini is left off it because its revenue cannot be separated from Google's. ChatGPT is the one product at the top of all three lists.

The headline finding: 29 of the top 50 vendors by spend do not appear anywhere on the web or mobile traffic lists. Traffic and money are two different leaderboards.

Replit: low traffic, real money

Replit is number 48 on web visits and number 6 on spending. My read: people do not browse Replit for fun. They open it to build something, and when it works, they pay.

Higgsfield: the creative tool outearning big names

Higgsfield, the AI creative suite, is number 28 on traffic and number 5 on spending. That puts it ahead of Suno (7), Lovable (8) and Perplexity (9) on the spending list.

Claude: number 12 on mobile, number 2 on spend

Claude is number 3 on web and only number 12 on mobile. On spending, Anthropic is number 2, behind only OpenAI. (The spending list ranks companies, so it says Anthropic and OpenAI, not Claude and ChatGPT.)

The plan mix explains part of it. 7.3% of Claude's consumer payers are on Max, the most expensive individual plan at $100 a month and up. For Google's $100 plan the share is 1.3%. For ChatGPT, the article text says 1.1% while the chart shows 1.3% for ChatGPT Pro, so I would not lean on that one number. If you want to know why so many people pick Max, I broke down what the plan is worth in API terms in Your $200 Claude Plan Is Worth $11,726 a Month.

The top 1% spend $903 a month

The top 1% of AI payers now spend an average of $903 a month on consumer cards for AI, up from $504 in January 2025. They over-index on tools for automation and building. The clearest case is n8n: the top 1% are 22.9 times more likely than the average AI buyer to pay for it (1.43% against 0.06%, U.S. panel, June to August 2026).

My take

If you build or pick AI tools, stop reading traffic charts as success charts. The products people pay for are the ones that finish a job: build the app (Replit, Lovable), make the asset (Higgsfield, Suno), run the workflow (n8n), write the code (Claude). The heaviest spenders are builders and automators, which matches what I see in my own workflow. Caveat: this is U.S. panel data on consumer cards, so business spending through company accounts is not in it.
