What is an AI Agent?

Hi! I’m Robby. As an AI engineer, I get asked one question a lot: "What is an AI Agent, and how is it different from the chatbot I use every day?"

It’s a great question. We hear the word "AI" everywhere, but the jump from a simple chatbot to an "Agent" is a huge deal. Let’s break it down in plain English.

Chatbots vs. AI Agents: The Simple Difference

Think of a standard chatbot like ChatGPT as a super-smart librarian. If you ask it a question, it can tell you everything it knows. It is amazing at talking and summarizing information. But, the librarian stays behind the desk. It can’t leave to go get you a book or handle your errands.

An AI Agent, on the other hand, is like a personal assistant.

  • The Chatbot: Only talks. It gives you an answer, and then it waits for your next prompt.
  • The AI Agent: Actually does things. It can use tools, click buttons, and make decisions to finish a task for you.

A Real-World Example: Booking a Flight

To see why this matters, let’s look at booking a flight.

If you use a Chatbot: You ask, "Find me a cheap flight to Paris." The chatbot writes back: "Here are some cheap flights I found on a website." You still have to click the links, sign in to the airline, and type in your credit card information yourself.

If you use an AI Agent: You tell the Agent, "Book me a flight to Paris under $600." The Agent doesn't just give you links. It:

  1. Goes to the website.
  2. Searches for flights that fit your budget.
  3. Checks your calendar to make sure you are free.
  4. Actually completes the booking for you.

From Prompting to Delegating

In the past, we had to do "prompt engineering." This meant we spent all our time typing perfect instructions to get the AI to give us the right text.

With AI Agents, we are moving toward goal delegation. Instead of telling the AI how to type, we give it a goal—like "plan my vacation" or "manage my inbox"—and the agent figures out the steps to get it done.

AI Agents are changing the way we work because they turn AI from a tool that just talks into a tool that actually gets the job done.
