OpenAI just changed what talking to ChatGPT actually feels like. The new voice experience is called GPT Live, and it is already the default for ChatGPT Voice, free users included.
Full Duplex, Not Walkie Talkie
The old voice mode waited for you to go completely silent before it responded, which made every exchange feel like trading turns on a radio. GPT Live is full duplex: it says small acknowledgments like "mmm" while you are still talking, it waits when you pause to think instead of jumping in, and it stops the instant you interrupt. In head to head testing, people preferred the new model over the old one 76 percent of the time.
It Gets Smarter Mid Conversation
GPT Live is not one static model answering every question the same way. Ask something genuinely hard and it quietly hands the question off to a frontier model behind the scenes, then keeps the conversation moving while that heavier model thinks it through. On a brutal web research benchmark, that routing pushed performance from under 1 percent to 75 percent. It feels like one assistant, but it is calling in more horsepower exactly when the question calls for it.
Visual Cards and More Voices
Voice mode now shows you things while you talk instead of just telling you. Ask about the weather, a stock, or a game score, and it pops up a visual card with the answer rather than reading you a paragraph of numbers. OpenAI also shipped nine remastered voices alongside the update.
Why It Matters
Talking to an AI has always had a tell: the pauses were too clean, the turn taking too mechanical, the interruptions clumsy. GPT Live closes most of that gap. It listens while you talk, reasons harder when the question deserves it, and gets out of the way the moment you cut in.
