I’m a software engineer, and today I want to show you something really cool. Have you ever wondered how apps turn someone's voice into written words? It’s called "Speech-to-Text," and today we are going to build our own using Java and an AI tool called AssemblyAI.

Don’t worry if you’re new to this—we’re going to take it one step at a time.

Step 1: Get Your API Key

First, you need a key to talk to the AI. Think of this like a secret password. Go to the AssemblyAI website and sign up. Once you log in, you’ll find your API key on your dashboard. Keep this safe!

Step 2: Set Up Your Java Project

We will use a tool called Maven to help manage our project. Maven makes it easy to add extra code—called dependencies—that we need to talk to the AI service.

  • Create a new Maven project in your favorite code editor.
  • Open your pom.xml file.
  • Add the AssemblyAI dependency so your project knows how to send audio files to their servers.

Step 3: Keep Your Key Safe

Never put your API key directly into your code. If you share your code, everyone will see it! Instead, create a file named .env. This is where you can store your secret key securely.

Step 4: Write the Code

Now for the fun part. We need to write a simple Java class that does three things:

  1. Read your audio file: This could be a recording of you saying, "Hello, this is a test."
  2. Send it to the AI: Our code will "upload" the file to AssemblyAI.
  3. Get the words back: The AI will process the sound and send back the text. We’ll print that text right in our console.

Step 5: Test It Out

Once your code is ready, hit the run button! If everything is set up right, you’ll see the text version of your audio appear on your screen in just a few seconds.
